After you wake up, what is the first thing you do in the morning? Beyond your phone, most likely you reach for a cup of coffee to jump start your day. However, did you know that coffee is dehydrating and acidic? After eight hours of sleep, our bodies are dehydrated, so coffee is the last thing it needs.

When it comes to your health, what you choose to drink first thing in the morning is important. The body needs something hydrating, cleansing, and energizing — and that’s where morning health tonics come in.

Health tonics are loaded with antioxidants and essential nutrients that are great for you. If you have never tried a health tonic, you might want to try this recipe that I’m enjoying right now!

Use these simple ingredients for the carrot ginger health tonic

This particular morning tonic recipe contains ginger, celery, and carrots, which are all great for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Ginger is great for indigestion, reduces menstrual pain, lowers the risk of infections, and improves brain function. In addition, studies show that ginger is great for those sore days after a workout, as it may reduce exercise-induced muscle soreness.

Celery is also a good source of important antioxidants and is loaded with beneficial enzymes. It also contains essential minerals such as folate, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and vitamins B6, C and K. These same minerals are essential for bodily functions and support digestion.

Carrots are a rather powerful vegetable. They contain beta-carotene, an antioxidant that contributes to stronger vision, reduces skin inflammation, speeds up healing process, and improves cognitive function. (A cautionary note: though carrots have a lot of benefits, the excessive intake of carrots can potentially change the coloring of your skin. If you eat or drink too many carrots or carrot juice, your skin may temporarily develop a slight yellowish or orange tint.)

Altogether these ingredients deliver a lot of benefits. It is best to consume as a juice to more easily absorb the nutrients and antioxidants. You can enjoy this tonic at any time of the day, but to maximize absorption, it’s best to drink this tonic first thing in the morning.

Carrot Ginger Health Tonic

An anti-inflammatory and antioxidant packed tonic that will reinvigorate your mornings.

Ingredients

  • 1 fist-sized piece of ginger
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 3 medium-sized apples
  • 6 carrots (3 if using large carrots)
  • 1 tbsp of lemon juice
  • Optional: 1 tsp of agave nectar (for a sweeter taste)
  • Optional: a dash of cayenne to serve

Directions

  1. Cut ginger into small chunks and put into juicer
  2. Break the celery into smaller pieces and put into juicer
  3. Cut apples into large slices (make sure to remove seeds) and put into juicer
  4. Cut carrots into small chunks and put into juicer
  5. Mix in the agave nectar and lemon juice into juice
  6. Optional: add 1/2 cup for water to dilute to make a larger juice
  7. Keep refrigerated in an air tight container and enjoy!

Tip: Your carrot tonic juice can be refrigerated for up to one week.
