19 Simple Ways to Add More Wellness in Your Life

Wellness may have become synonymous with expensive ways to self-care, but it doesn’t have to bust your budget to improve your life and health. Daily boutique fitness classes, only eating an organic plant-based diet, and high end skincare regimens all in the name of self-care is not necessary to live a more wellness-focused lifestyle.

Wellness is your own mindset. It is very personal – what works for one person’s lifestyle might not work for another. But wellness isn’t about how much you are willing to spend. There are many ways to incorporate wellness into your life with it also being accessible and affordable.

So I created a list of 19 simple-yet-significant ways to add more wellness into your life, because living well doesn’t have to be about luxury.

1. Focus on gratitude

A positive attitude can really boost both your physical and psychological health. It can also improve your sleep and self-esteem. There are a lot of way to express gratitude. Start now by taking a moment to silently acknowledge all that you have.

2. Write in a journal

Intention journaling is a great wellness and gratitude practice. You can choose to write in your journal on a daily or even a monthly basis. If you don’t know where to start, follow these intention journaling tips!

3. Practice mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation may seem simple in concept, however, it is a practice that involves actual effort. Start by taking a seat, focusing on your breathing, and then bringing your mind’s attention to the present moment. If you want a bit more assistance, there are also guided meditations (like Calm and Headspace) to help start your practice.

4. Connect with your breath

Practicing breathing exercises (pranayama) is a great way to feel centered and calm to ward off moments of stress whenever things are feeling a bit hectic.

5. Be kind to yourself

Moments of stress happen, it is a part of being human. However, it is the way we manage that stress which determines how it affects us and our life. In moments of stress, learn to laugh it off. It’s not the end of the world, so don’t be so hard on yourself.

6. Take time to unplug

I know this one is hard (it’s a challenge for me too), but even if it is for just an hour, try to limit screen time. That could an hour before you go to bed, or even when you are out socializing with friends. Trust me, there is a world out there that is happening beyond the dimensions of your phone.

7. Get outside and in nature

Spending time outside is really important + it feels so good! You don’t need to plan a whole hiking adventure (though hiking is a fantastic way to get exercise plus get outside). Even if it is just for a short time to read, walk/run, or to sit and enjoy soaking in it all. Any time outside is always time well spent.

8. Drink more water

This is a big one. Staying hydrated by drinking enough water is crucial for your health and well-being. Water is essential for your skin health, performance for exercise, and many of your bodily functions.

10. Booze a little less

Speaking of drinking: this one is simple. A little less booze is both good for your health and your wallet.

11. Find a routine

Good habits become routine when you begin to increase that habit in small ways. Maybe you want to improve your hydration by drinking more water. You can start to make it a habit by carrying a small refillable water bottle with you as a reminder to stay hydrated.

12. Pick out a plant baby

For a variety of reasons, plants are great for your health. Indoor plants can help regulate humidity and can increase levels of positivity. They can also help you feel more relaxed and calm, which in turn benefits your every day mood. Plus, the added benefit of seeing something new grow!

13. Sign up for an event

It can be challenging as an adult to get out there and make new friends. A great way to do that is by finding an event aligned with your interests and allows for you to meet new people. What’s better than doing something you love and getting to enjoy with others who love it too!

14. Prioritize positive relationships

I’m not telling you to go and start cutting negative people out of your life. But try to spend more time with positive people. Those who encourage and inspire you. People that have you feeling like your best self when with them.

15. Start a passion project

Whether that means just doing something for fun or building it into an actual business, try to tap into your skills and interests! Spending time in your day beyond working or sleeping can do wonders for your well-being and outlook on life.

16. Yoga

I may be a bit biased here, but yoga is so good for your mind/body/spirit. There are many ways in which yoga is accessible. For example, you can do donation based classes or even for free online with YouTube or DoYogaWithMe (which accepts donations as well)! Plus you can make use of free and discounted trials at yoga studios local to you.

17. Embrace real simple foods

You don’t need to go vegan or eat everything organic (unless you want to). Try to eat more real simple foods whenever you can. No matter how you slice it, the most convenient foods are much more costly, not just in money but also the price that your body pays.

18. Do a tech detox

We live in a hyperconnected world, so being on your phone 24/7 might not be a big deal, but it can be addictive. You don’t need to 100% break up with your phone, but taking a break, even it is for just that one hour before bed can do you a world of good.

19. Get a good night’s sleep

Make getting a good night’s sleep a priority. Small changes like making a set bedtime can help you prep your way to a better night’s sleep.
