How to Drink More Water and Stay Hydrated All Day Long

Our bodies are made of 70% water, so H2O plays some real important roles in our body. That means drinking enough daily (yes, every day) is vital for our overall health. Staying hydrated benefits digestion, improves the skin + hair, promotes cell health, boosts the metabolism, lubricates joints, maintains electrolyte balance and blood pressure. I mean, there is basically no downside to drinking water!

But even though we all know it is important to stay hydrated, we often don’t do it. Dehydration is a serious problem because studies report that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Yes, you read that right. So often we wait to drink water only when we are thirsty, which TBH is too late. It’s absolutely necessary to drink up, so check out these tips to make drinking water less of a chore.

Drink H2O in the A.M.

First thing when you wake up, drink a glass of water! Because you have been sleeping for 7-8ish hours, you wake up dehydrated. Not only does water in the morning hydrate you, it boosts your metabolism, gives your brain fuel, helps the body get rid of toxins, and strengthens the immune system.

Filter your water

Filtering your water is important for your health, because that life-sustaining liquid can carry more than what you bargained for. After traveling through lots of pipeline to make it to your tap, that clean-looking water can pick up contaminants, minerals, chlorine, etc. Since you are drinking this everyday, who knows the long-term effects of these contaminants.

Plus, filtered water tastes better than what is typically coming out of your faucet or fountain. You can get filtered water at home with Dafi’s Alkaline Water Pitcher (use the code healthlete20% for a discount on all Dafi products). This water pitcher not only filters your tap water to reduce chlorine and other toxins, but it also adds some alkaline mineral hydrates making your water less acidic.

Flavor your water

If the thought of H2O sounds like a snooze to you, bring some excitement to your water by adding fresh fruit, veggies, and herbs. You can create tasty infused water with ingredients like: grapefruit, strawberries, lemon, cucumber, basil, mint, or even lavender. You can also jazz things up with a splash of juice. Get creative by experimenting with different mixtures!

Always refill when empty

Make it a rule that as soon as you finish the water in your bottle, you have to fill it back up again. Filling up your bottle anytime it is empty is a great reminder to keep drinking, as you’re just more likely to keep drinking if the glass is full.

Use your phone

Still having trouble improving your water intake? Try an app! Plant Nanny is a great (and super adorable) app to help you start your well-hydrated journey. It takes some information about your body and activity levels and suggests a certain amount of water you should drink daily. And then it keeps track of how many glasses (and ounces) of water you’ve consumed by giving you into a virtual plant. If you aren’t meeting your water quota there are consequences for your plant. So help your plant out by drinking water!

Carry a reusable bottle

The first benefit of a reusable water bottle is that it is better for the environment, as you are using less plastic. Plus, a reusable water bottle is super easy to carry with your in your bag whether it is to work or the gym. It becomes a convenient reminder to stay hydrated. If you want filtered water while on-the-go, try this Water Filtering Bottle from Dafi (use code healthlete20% at checkout) which filters your water as you drink it.

Hydrate during your workouts

It’s not only important bring your water to your workouts, but to actually drink your water during your workouts! After an hour of fitness, it is so key to finish your bottle every time. Of course, everybody’s needs around hydration are different, and no one likes that heavy, sloshy feeling when they exercise. No need to gulp it down, just a few sips before, during, and after your workout will mean an empty water bottle in no time.

One-to-one with dehydrating beverages

Though coffee and alcohol are liquids, they are dehydrating since they increase the excretion of water from the body. So try to limit your intake of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. However, if you are already in the habit of drinking a few of these beverages a day, make sure you stick the one-to-one rule. For every cup of coffee or cocktail you have, you should follow it up with a glass of water.

Sip with every meal (or snack)

Whether you are eating at home or dining out, have a glass water with your meal. Try to finish the glass by the end of your meal. Sipping water while you eat helps you to eat at a slower speed allowing you to better enjoy your meal. It also aids with digestion (and even helps prevent constipation)! You can also do the same while you snack while you working or lounging.

Bedside water

This is definitely my favorite tip. Before you go to bed, bring a glass of water to your bedside nightstand. Not only to sip if you wake up in the middle of the night thirsty, but it is there in the morning to remind you to hydrate. This way you bookend each day with water!

Let these tips will help you establish a routine when it comes to drinking water to make it more manageable (and feel less like a chore). Also check out these simple ways to add more wellness into your life!
