How to prioritize your mental health

Today is World Mental Health Day. A day for bringing awareness to and reducing the social stigma of mental health. Traditionally, society has trained us to have a one-dimensional view of mental health, but that narrative is simply not true.

Mental health is relevant to all of us, as we are all faced with our own challenges. But, it is up to us to keep it in check. It’s time to start prioritizing our mental health as much as we do our physical health.

Talk about it

It can be an uncomfortable, but talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health. Reach out to a friend or family member, try text if face to face is a little too intimidating. Let them know what you are feeling and have been struggling with. Tell them why you feel it is important to discuss this with them, and what you would like to do to move forward. Do not be afraid to let someone close to you be there for you.

Schedule a therapy session

Think about how you plan your workouts for the day or week. What if you did that for therapy? If you can’t make it to a therapist in-person, try the therapy app Basis. Exercise

Take a break from your phone

Our phones can often be a point of stress. Constantly being connected without making meaningful connections with others can leave us feeling alone. So breaks are necessary, even if it is just before bed. Try putting your phone on “do not disturb” for a few hours so you can focus during your work day. Also try reserving special hours for being on social media.

Plan a vacation

Use your vacation days! More than half of Americans do not use all of their vacation days. Plan to visit a friend or family. Maybe even think about taking your first solo trip. Whether it is a staycation or an exotic vacation, science shows that shows that the best part of a vacation is planning one. The anticipation of a vacation or break on the horizon can make us happy.

Self-care

Self-care isn’t one size fits all. It is whatever you need to do to be good to yourself. Go for a quick massage for your lunch break or start trying mindfulness meditation. Do what your mind or body are craving.
